Sidewalk Rules Differ Across the Calgary Region
Municipal sidewalk clearing rules are set city by city, which affects what property owners hire contractors to do. A few examples:
- Calgary: The City of Calgary requires property owners to clear snow and ice from adjacent public sidewalks within 24 hours after a snowfall ends (Street Bylaw, section 67).
- Airdrie: The City of Airdrie gives all property owners 24 hours once the snow stops to clear sidewalks in front of and alongside their property (Community Standards Bylaw B-09/2012).
- Cochrane: The Town of Cochrane requires anyone who owns or occupies land to keep adjacent sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleared within 48 hours of the last snowfall ending (Community Standards and Public Safety Bylaw 06/2025, section 6.1).
- Okotoks: The Town of Okotoks requires all persons to remove snow, ice, dirt or debris from adjacent sidewalks as soon as possible and in any case within 24 hours (Traffic Bylaw 37-24, Schedule A).
