Snowfall. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Fort St. John station record an average of about 206 cm of snowfall a year, with about 14 days a year bringing 5 cm or more of new snow.
Sidewalks. The City of Fort St. John requires all persons to remove snow and ice from sidewalks bordering their parcel within 48 hours after snowfall stops, with no residential or commercial distinction (Sidewalk Regulation Bylaw No. 2528, 2020, s. 6(a)). Roof snow or ice that endangers sidewalk users must be removed immediately (s. 6(b)).
Snow on the road. Sidewalk Regulation Bylaw No. 2528, s. 7(a) prohibits placing snow from one's property on the roadway, on City property, or on or around fire hydrants. The City's winter page says driveway snow must go on the lawn or to the Public Snow Dump, but that snow shovelled from the sidewalk can be placed on the road near the curb.
City plowing. Roads are cleared in five categories, from Category 1 major thoroughfares to Category 5 residential and commercial streets. The City says Categories 1 to 4 generally take 4 to 5 days after snow stops.
For contractors. From October 1 to April 30, on-street parking is restricted on Category 1 roads, and on Category 5 streets from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the scheduled clearing day, with a $40 ticket and possible towing. A Public Snow Dump is available for hauled snow.
