Does Personal Auto Insurance Cover Snow Plowing?

A lot of plowing businesses start with a personal pickup and a used blade. The question of whether the truck's personal insurance covers that work is one of the most common, and most important, a new operator can ask.

General information only. Your policy wording and your insurer's rules decide coverage, so confirm with a broker.

The Short Answer

Plowing for yourself, such as your own driveway, is typically treated as personal use. Plowing for payment is typically treated as commercial or business use, and personal auto policies are generally not built for it. Insurers usually expect you to disclose business use, and failing to do so can put coverage at risk.

Why It Matters

Insurance applications ask how a vehicle is used, and that answer is part of how the policy is priced. If your truck is used for paid plowing and your insurer was not told, an accident during that work could lead to a coverage dispute. In the worst case, you could be responsible for damage and injury costs yourself.

Plowing also carries hazards insurers price differently: night work, low visibility, busy parking lots, pedestrians, backing, and the added width and weight of the blade.

Common Situations

"I only plow a few neighbours for cash." Still paid work. Tell your insurer or talk to a broker. See part time and side hustle plowing.

"My landscaping truck is on a commercial policy, but I added a plow." Your insurer may still need to know about the winter operation, the blade and any spreader.

"My employee uses their own truck to plow for me." Their personal policy may not respond, and your business could be exposed. Ask about hired and non owned auto.

Province by Province

  • Ontario and Alberta: auto insurance comes from private insurers, and business use needs to be declared. See Ontario and Alberta commercial auto guides.
  • British Columbia: basic insurance is through ICBC, and vehicle rating depends on use. See ICBC and plow trucks.
  • Saskatchewan: basic plate insurance comes through SGI. See SGI and plow trucks.

Remember: Auto Is Only One Piece

Even with the right auto policy, your truck insurance generally does not cover a customer who slips on a driveway you cleared. That requires general liability. See personal vs commercial auto for plow trucks and the full plow truck insurance guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my insurance go up if I tell them I plow snow?

Possibly, because commercial use carries more risk. But the cost of an undisclosed use dispute after an accident can be far higher.

Can I add plowing to my personal policy?

Some insurers may allow certain business use, while others will require a commercial policy. A broker can tell you what applies.
